Ng\u0101 Tamatoa was formed in the 1970\u2019s and was a M\u0101ori activist group which promoted M\u0101ori rights, and highlighted issues relating to racial discrimination, the loss of te reo M\u0101ori and continued confiscation of land.<\/p>
Through a series of high-profile protest actions, Ng\u0101 Tamatoa galvanised public discussion about the rights of M\u0101ori.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p> Made up of mainly urban and was the beginning of a movement which helped to propel real social and political changes in New Zealand which has seen the establishment of M\u0101ori language nests,\u00a0k\u014dhanga reo<\/a>, and the\u00a0kura kaupapa M\u0101ori immersion schools<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> In 1987, the\u00a0M\u0101ori Language Act<\/a>\u00a0was passed by the New Zealand Government, giving\u00a0Te Reo M\u0101ori<\/a>\u00a0(M\u0101ori language) official language status.<\/span><\/p> The dedicated work by Ng\u0101 Tamatoa started a journey the revitalisation of te reo M\u0101ori and other important Ng\u0101 Tamatoa remained strong on a number of kaupapa. They initiated the annual protests at\u00a0Waitangi<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Waitangi Day<\/a>, in 1973 after Prime Minister\u00a0Norman Kirk<\/a>\u00a0changed the name of the day to 'New Zealand Day'. The group claimed that the \u2018Treaty is a fraud\u2019 because of the ongoing breaches committed by the Government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Ng\u0101 Tamatoa organised the historic 1975 Land March, led by Dame Whina Cooper, from the top of North Island to Parliament in Wellington. They were also involved in disrupting the University of Auckland engineering students\u2019 haka party, a part of the annual student capping parade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> In that same year the government established the Waitangi Tribunal. The government realised they were heavy handed and had been ignoring the Treaty of Waitangi.<\/p> In 1979, Ng\u0101 Tamatoa wore black armbands to the celebrations to mourn the loss of M\u0101ori land much of which had been confiscated or annexed by state legislation. The Auckland M\u0101ori Council declared their support of the protest by making a submission that cited fourteen statutes that were currently breaching the Treaty.<\/p> The impact Ng\u0101 Tamatoa has had on Aotearoa can be felt throughout our education system and many other parts of our social and political landscape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>[\/oxy_rich_text][ct_text_block
